This event, hosted by the Church Monuments Society, will examine various elements of the commemorative sculpture erected during a period of revolution, war and rapid industrialisation. Commemorating a rapidly expanding and thriving professional and commercial middle class, national heroes and social elites, these memorials drew upon increasing antiquarian interests and evoked varied responses on the popular culture of the day.

Keynote speaker: Professor Alison Yarrington (Dean of the School of the Arts, English and Drama, Loughborough). Other speakers include: Dr Clive Easter; Paul Wooles (Conservaion Manager, Skillington Workshops Lts); Revd Charles Card-Reynolds (Commissary of the Diocese of the Windward Islands); Barbara Tomlinson (Curator Emeritus, Royal Museums Greenwich); Kerry Bristol (Leeds University); Jonathan Kewley (Durham University).
