West Sussex has been poor and rural for much of its history, and quite a number of its more humble buildings were not subject to heavy Victorian restoration, so preserve some of their post-Reformation furnishings.
It is hoped this day tour will visit one seventeenth-century Quaker Meeting house, and five Anglican churches which have significant pre-Victorian furnishings, and the day will finish with something completely different – a visit to see the 12C wall paintings at Hardham. The day will be led by Trevor Cooper, who writes and lectures on post-Reformation interiors. Itinerary (subect to confirmation): Blue Idol (17C Quaker Meeting house); Warminghurst (18C interior to a medieval church); Parham House parish church (refurbished about 1820); Burton Park (17C wall paintings in a small medieval building); Egdean (small church, built or substantially rebuilt in the 1620s); Stopham (medieval building, with Jacobean stained glass, recently restored, and Jacobean brasses); Hardham (small 12C building with original wall paintings, faded but very atmospheric).
The day will start at 11 A.M. at Pulborough station, West Sussex RH20 1SG, (accessible from London Victoria) and will finish with a drop-off at Pulborough around 5.45 P.M. Cost: £35.00 to include mini bus hire. Pub lunch not included. Please note that prior booking is essential for this event.
