At the Church Monuments Society’s and the Ecclesiological Society’s joint conference on 1 October about funerals and funeral monuments in the medieval, early modern, and Victorian periods Brian & Moira Gittos will talk about medieval churchyard monuments and focus on carved stone effigies, which were a more frequent form of churchyard commemoration than might be expected. From a country wide survey that is far from complete, more than 230 candidate monuments have been identified. Some can be proved to have been set up in the churchyard and for others it is a matter of judgement. Book here
